The Birth of Clobber.
Clobber was founded in 2002 by Anna Read. Anna qualified as a PE and French teacher from Birmingham University in 1995 and spent 8 years teaching in schools in Kent and Gloucestershire.
Anna and her husband Ben moved to Nailsworth in 2001, at a time when the town was going through a period of real change. Derelict mills up and down the valley were being transformed into the most exquisite living accommodation and business sites. Most significantly, The Old George Hotel right in the heart of Nailsworth which had been boarded up for over 20 years finally began its metamorphosis into several retail units with accommodation above.
Anna’s vision of one day owning her own coffee shop (hasn’t every woman had this pipe dream at some point in their lives?!), a sports shop, or even a clothes shop suddenly became a possibility! One business course and a few phone calls later Clobber was born and is soon to celebrate its 10th birthday. Clobber opened its second store in a quaint premises on the High Steet, Malmesbury in 2004.
Clobber has evolved over the years, but Anna’s original vision still holds true; providing a relaxed, friendly atmosphere for men and women, with distinctive clothing brands for all occasions; work, leisure and play.
2013 comes with yet more change. A combination of the recession really hitting the High Street and Anna’s desire to concentrate on the ever expanding branch in Nailsworth and juggle being a mother of two little girls led to the closure of the Malmesbury store in September 2012. Anna now has more time to focus on making Clobber the best it can possibly be and on searching for up and coming brands – those ever elusive labels that are both well priced AND well made.
